Vladka Meed was only 17 when Hitler's armies invaded Poland and entered Warsaw. As soon
as the Nazi Occupation began, she joined the Resistance. She took the surname of Vladka when she was asked to work on the “Aryan” side on behalf of the Underground. Chosen
for her "Aryan" looks and perfect Polish,
she showed great bravery and ingenuity in the course of her many clandestine missions.
She was arrested several times but managed
to get away. During the mass deportations, Abrasha Blum and Emmanuel Ringelblum obtained a fake work certificate for her and her family. Her mother and brother were however deported to Treblinka. Her sister, too, was arrested. Vladka remained alone. During the Insurrection, Valdka sent weapons over the Wall on behalf of the JFO. She helped Jews escape the Ghetto and take refuge in Christian homes. In her capacity of Jewish National Committee officer, she guided Jews to the bunkers and other hide-outs. She also did her utmost to establish contact with and help survivors of the work-camps as well as those hiding out in the forests. After the war, Vladka settled in New York.
